Homoeopathy In Animals

“Homoeopathy cures a larger percentage of cases than any other forms of treatment and is beyond doubt safer and more economical”-Mahatma Gandhi.”

Ever looked in the eyes of your pet and felt totally and utterly helpless in easing their pain and sufferings?

They deserve no stone to go unturned when it comes to their health and well being. There were days when animals lived longer and didn’t get any human diseases.

Now comes the question , what has changed when it comes to the health of animals??
Well , a lot has changed, the food fed to them, the water they drink, and the environment they live in which is highly toxic and polluted decreased the quality of health of animals to a great extent.

Homoeopathy is found to be one of the best holistic and safest treatments for many people and this holds true in the case of animals as well. Veterinary homoeopathy is one of the safe, effective and powerful form of medicine based on the principles developed by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, which is “like cures like”.

The idea behind using homoeopathy is to strengthen the immunity of the animals and to treat the disease from the roots.

According to the Academy Of Veterinary Homoeopathy, the recurrence rates of diseases in animals is almost minimum and negligible with homoeopathy. Some conditions which respond very well to homoeopathy in animals are skin allergies, ear infections, asthma, Inflammatory Bowel Disease and epilepsy. It can also be used in acute conditions like traumatic injuries, infections and in cases of poisoning.

Just like in humans, the individualistic approach of homoeopathy is applied in animals as well, and no two animals are treated in the exact same way for the same diseases. In addition to the nature of symptoms, time of occurrence, frequency of symptoms, and possible aggravating and ameliorating factors, the pet’s overall demeanour and behaviour as elicited from its master and the possible causative factors are also well considered in homoeopathy.

Here is one such case giving an idea on the scope of homoeopathy in treating animals.

  • In a case of dog suffering from infectious canine tracheo bronchitis, with breathing difficulties, wheezing and incessant coughing, which is worse in the open air and is accompanied by retching or bringing up of mucus, the sufferings were relieved on prescribing Ipecacuanha 6c .

Adding to this, here are some personal experiences from my colleagues,

  • A pet dog of the breed Cocker Spaniel, which was about an year old, stopped taking food abruptly, on enquiry, it was known that the complaints started after an incident, which led to fright and mortification. After prescribing a dose of Arnica, it started moving about and was relatively active which was very evident in its demeanour and later started having food, all of this happened in a very short span of time which was quite surprising to note.
  • In a case of cow after 2 weeks of delivery, with suppressed lochia, fever and reduced milk production after delivery, the complaints were relieved in about a week on administering Pyrogenum 200.
  • In a case of pigeon which was having a wound on its leg and wing with bleeding, arnica and Symphytum were given along with calendula as an external application, the bird was able to fly, the next day.

Apart from these remedies, there are many other remedies in homoeopathy which help in treating various other conditions effectively and can work wonders.

Homoeopathy helps in giving a broader aspect of treatment in animals, and helps not just in removing the disease but in improving the overall quality of health in them by strengthening their immune systems and it is a system worth giving a chance as it aims at individualistic approach and “treating as a whole”.
